Pitt's popular non-credit Coding Certificate Program will be offered in Corry at the Corry Higher Education Council beginning in September. The sequence and fees for the certificate are listed below. These skills are a must for individuals currently working in the healthcare industry or considering a career in a medical office. This sequence of non-credit courses prepares participants to sit for the American Health Information Management Association’s Certified Coding Associate Exam.

Sept. 8 - Nov. 24

This course covers the basics of Medical Terminology, focusing on vocabulary, word origin, construction, definition and spelling. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Dec. 8 - March 2

This is an introduction to Anatomy & Physiology, starting at the cellular level and progressing into skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and muscular systems. Prerequisite: Medical Terminology or permission of the instructor.

March 16 - July 6

This course provides a basic introduction to the format of CPT codes as well as CPT coding conventions. It will also offer you an opportunity to demonstrate different ways to locate CPT codes through the use of the codebook’s index. You will learn ways to ensure accurate code assignment through the application of coding guidelines from the AMA and CMS. Finally, this course will help you delineate the documentations necessary for code assignment. Prerequisite: Medical Terminology and Anatomy & Physiology or permission of the instructor.

July 20 - Nov. 9

This course will provide you with an introduction to the ICD-9 coding system. You will learn how coding procedures relate to medical reimbursement and office operations. This course will help prepare you for the American Health Information Management Association’s Certified Coding Associate Exam. Prerequisite: Diagnosis & Procedure CPT/ HCPCS Coding or permission of the instructor.
